Apostille in Thailand — FAQ

Thailand's accession to the Hague Apostille Convention was approved by the Cabinet, but the convention is not yet in force. During the transition, Thai documents still follow the consular legalization route.

Can I get an apostille in Thailand today?

No. Accession was approved but the convention has not entered into force, so the Department of Consular Affairs continues to issue legalization, not apostilles.

What should I do in the meantime?

Use the established chain: certified translation, legalization by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, then attestation at the destination country's embassy in Bangkok.

Will documents legalised now still be valid later?

Documents legalised under the current system remain valid according to the accepting authority's rules; they do not become invalid because an apostille system starts later.

Which documents will be eligible for apostille?

Public documents — civil registration records, court and government documents, notarised private documents and official corporate records.

Do private documents qualify?

Only after they are notarised, which converts them into public documents for this purpose.

Does an apostille replace notarisation?

No. An apostille is the final authentication layer; the underlying notarisation or issuing certification still has to exist.

How should I plan my timeline?

Plan against the current legalization route and ask for a status update before submitting a time-critical file. We do not promise dates set by government offices.
