MFA (consular) legalization in Thailand — FAQ

The Department of Consular Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, legalises Thai official documents and their certified translations so they can be used abroad. This is the step most commonly missed by applicants.

Which documents can be legalised?

Civil registration records (birth, marriage, divorce, death, house registration), academic transcripts and degrees, police clearance certificates, medical certificates and company records issued by the DBD.

Does the document have to be translated first?

For overseas use, yes in most cases: the Thai original and a certified translation are submitted together, and both are legalised.

How long does legalization take?

A standard channel of a few working days and an express channel of about one working day are generally available, subject to the department's own scheduling.

Can a representative submit for me?

Yes. Submission through an authorised representative with a power of attorney and identification is standard practice.

What comes after MFA legalization?

If the destination country is not covered by an apostille arrangement in force, the document is attested at that country's embassy or consulate in Bangkok.

Why are documents rejected at this step?

The most common reasons are name spelling that differs from the passport, an outdated document copy, translation errors, and missing prior certification of the issuing office.

What is the service fee?

Fees depend on the document type, language pair, number of legalization steps and urgency. Request a written quotation by LINE, phone or email.
