Thai–foreign marriage registration — FAQ
Registering a marriage between a Thai national and a foreign national involves the foreign embassy, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and a district office (amphur). The order of steps matters.
What is the first step for the foreign partner?
Obtain an affirmation or certificate of freedom to marry from your embassy in Thailand, according to that embassy's own procedure.
Does the affirmation need translation?
Yes. It is translated into Thai and legalised by the Department of Consular Affairs before the district office will accept it.
Where is the marriage registered?
At any district office (amphur or khet) in Thailand. Some offices are more experienced with mixed-nationality registrations than others.
Is an interpreter required?
Many district offices require an interpreter when one party does not speak Thai, and some ask for witnesses with identification.
Is the Thai marriage valid in my country?
Generally yes once the Thai marriage certificate is translated and legalised, then registered or recognised according to your national rules.
How long does the whole process take?
Commonly one to three weeks including embassy, translation, legalization and registration, depending on embassy appointment availability.
